Washington, DC — Today, Mary Small, acting National Policy Director, issued this statement following the passage of President Biden’s COVID-relief package through the US House of Representatives:
“The passage of the COVID-relief package through the House of Representatives is long overdue and desperately needed. As the US passes over half a million COVID deaths with an economy still in shambles, Democrats in Congress must continue to work with urgency to control the pandemic and provide relief to workers and communities. . The impact of grassroots activists and progressives in Congress cannot be overstated. Because of the leadership of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and Rep. Pramila Jayapal, the House-passed package is stronger and delivers more meaningful economic relief. Progressives standing united were able to include crucial provisions like an increase in the minimum wage and survival checks without additional restrictions.
“Now, Senate Democrats must follow suit and quickly pass this rescue plan, instead of negotiating with people’s lives and livelihoods. They have already compromised by using the needlessly limited and lengthy budget reconciliation process instead of eliminating the filibuster to pass the legislation this moment calls for. The American people don’t need more compromises, they need results, and there’s no time to waste. ”
