Washington, DC — Today, Meagan Hatcher-Mays, Indivisible’s Director of Democracy Policy, issued the following statement on the House Oversight Committee’s Hearing to overturn D.C.’s Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Amendment Act, a bill that would provide much-needed reforms to the District of Columbia’s policing system:
“By voting no on today’s committee vote, Democrats not only proved their commitment to the residents of D.C., and their right to home rule, but also rejected a blatant attempt by the MAGA GOP to jam them up on a ‘gotcha’ vote. Indivisible has said from the beginning of this Congress that Democrats had to be ready to fight back against these exact kinds of bad-faith votes: by rejecting the GOP’s framing of hot button issues, refusing to validate their critique of Democratic policies, and ultimately vote against all future ‘gotcha’ attempts. Every time the GOP succeeds on a gotcha, they become emboldened to force even more specious votes that they can lie about on Fox News.
“Democrats must continue to hold strong, given that the GOP has escalated their attacks on D.C. this Congress. It’s more important than ever that Democrats remain strong supporters and megaphones for the people of the District of Columbia in Congress, both to protect the principle of home rule and to show that the caucus won’t fall into the GOP’s narrative trap.”
