Washington, D.C. — Today, Ezra Levin, Indivisible’s co-founder and co-executive director, released the following statement on the anniversary of the violent insurrection on January 6, 2021, incited by Donald Trump:
“Five years ago today, Donald Trump incited a violent mob to attack the U.S. Capitol in a last-ditch effort to cling to power after losing a free and fair election. January 6 was not a protest that got out of hand. It was an attempted coup, carried out in plain sight.
“Marking this anniversary is not just about remembering the past. It’s about confronting the dangerous reality of the present. The same man who fueled that insurrection is once again in power, and his contempt for the Constitution and law has only grown. In his first year back in office, he’s abused executive authority at every turn. Threatening political opponents, attempting to consolidate and intimidate the press, militarizing our streets, and exploiting the middle class to line his pockets, Trump continues to brush aside our democracy. We cannot let him continue.
“Democracy is not self-enforcing, and it is still under attack. Defending it requires courage and sustained resistance from the people and institutions. Since Trump took office last year, people have shown up in record breaking numbers to say NO KINGS. This year will be a test of our democracy’s resilience. We are cleareyed of the threats ahead, and we are not backing down.”
