Washington, D.C. — Today, Indivisible’s co-founder and co-executive Director Ezra Levin released the following statement in response to Andy Kim’s victory in the New Jersey Senate race:
"Andy Kim’s journey from being a resistance leader to a longshot congressional candidate to to a longshot primary candidate to becoming New Jersey’s next U.S. Senator is remarkable. From the outset, local Indivisible groups and our national team knew Andy was the leader New Jersey needed, endorsing him long before the first votes were cast in his senate primary. His victory isn’t just a win for the Garden State—it’s a victory for democracy itself. By overcoming a deeply entrenched, corrupt political machine, Andy has demonstrated political bravery that will be talked about for years to come.
"This triumph is a clear reflection of Andy’s courage and the strength of his campaign, which energized voters in every corner of the state. Indivisible has always believed in Andy Kim’s vision—his ability to unite a diverse coalition of supporters and his relentless determination to fight for what’s right. We are proud to have stood with Andy and behind the grassroots leaders across New Jersey who helped turn this campaign into a movement.
"Andy’s commitment to pro-democracy values and his enthusiastic embrace of filibuster reform to get shit done inspired a wave of support from everyday New Jerseyans. His victory shows that the people are ready for a Senate that works for them. Throughout his career, Andy has remained dedicated to his principles, always putting New Jerseyans first. Now, as he joins Senator Cory Booker in Washington, we’re confident the Senate will be one step closer to becoming a body that truly serves the people.
"Andy’s rise from underdog to Senator-elect is a powerful testament to the impact of grassroots organizing. Congratulations to Andy Kim and to every activist and Indivisible leader across New Jersey who worked tirelessly to make this victory happen.”
Early in the cycle, Indivisible national endorsed Andy Kim for Senate when he announced his challenge to indicted Senator Bob Menendez. In order to earn a national endorsement, a candidate must demonstrate they’ve earned broad and committed support from their local Indivisible network. All endorsed candidates must have a strong pro-democracy platform aligned with our movement’s values and the enthusiastic support of informed, energized voters in their district.
Mervyn Turner, OneNJ7:
“Andy took on the Democratic Party machine - and won both the nomination and the election. His victory is truly a victory for the grass roots and for our democracy. Our nation will be well served by his presence in the Senate.”
Liz deBeer, Indivisible Two Rivers:
“We are exhausted but proud we worked together to elect strong candidates who reflect our values. Our efforts to secure a more democratic primary ballot began years ago and culminated in Andy Kim’s historical win against machine politics, a huge win for NJ.”
Lisa Vandever, Indivisible Rahway:
“Andy Kim’s jump into the Senate race and his stance against the County Line were hugely inspirational. We were proud to be one of the first, along with other Indivisible groups, to give him our full-fledge support and endorsement, even as machine Democrats lagged far behind.”
The following Indivisible groups across New Jersey formally endorsed Andy Kim and recommended him to Indivisible for our national endorsement. Please contact them for their local perspectives on the race:
