Washington, DC — Today, Indivisible announced its endorsement of Delia Ramirez in the race for Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District. The announcement is the latest for the progressive grassroots organization, which endorses throughout each election cycle:
“Through her life and career, Delia Ramirez has led with compassion and fought to build a more equitable Illinois. As a state legislator, she showed an unwavering commitment to progressive policies that made housing, education, and healthcare more accessible, and mitigated the impacts of climate change on vulnerable communities,” said Leah Greenberg, co-founder and co-executive director of Indivisible. “Delia Ramirez embodies Indivisible values, and she will be a trailblazer as the first Latina from the Midwest in Congress. We’re thrilled to endorse her and to see her build on her record of leadership in Congress.”
Delia Ramirez was first elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 2018. As a daughter of Guatemalan immigrants, she sponsored and passed a first-in-the-nation bill expanding Medicaid benefits to all seniors, regardless of immigration status. She established Illinois’ first legislative housing committee and spearheaded a $200 million investment to build affordable housing. And she worked hard to pass landmark climate legislation, requiring Illinois to move to 100% clean energy by 2045 and providing a just transition for workers and impacted communities. Ramirez is one of four candidates vying for the Democratic nomination to represent Illinois’ new 3rd Congressional District.
“Delia Ramirez is a community leader who is committed to working families and social and economic justice. When she was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 2018, she became an effective leader and advocate for important legislation,” said Marj Halperin of Indivisible Chicago Alliance. “We are excited about the opportunity to bring a strategic and effective progressive leader and coalition builder – and the first Latina from the Midwest – to Congress. ”
The endorsement from one of the leading national progressive organizations will be a boost for the candidate facing a competitive primary contest.
To earn Indivisible’s national endorsement, a candidate must clear a tough three-stage process that requires broad support from local Indivisible group members at multiple points. All endorsed candidates must have a strong progressive platform aligned with our movement’s values and the enthusiastic support of informed energized voters in their district.
