Washington, DC — Today, Indivisible released the following statement following passage of the Laken Riley Act in the House:
“This was a really badly bungled first big piece of legislation for the Trump era. They need to change course. Democrats need to get back on track, otherwise the GOP will continue to bulldoze them -- and people will get hurt. ” said Ezra Levin, co-executive director of Indivisible. “Schumer and Jeffries both flubbed this. Many Democrats are unhappy with the direction the Leadership is going, and rightly calling out the shortsightedness of the current plan -- or lack of plan. ”
“Democrats need to start projecting a plan. Reinforcing Republicans’ anti-immigrant messaging and handing them political wins without a fight is not a plan,” said Mari Urbina, Managing Director of Indivisible. “Democrats who want to win the public’s trust on immigration, who want durable and effective solutions -- those Democrats need to know that Donald Trump is not a partner on that. Immigration policy is a messaging playground for Republicans who use immigrants as scapegoats to expand their power but never offer real solutions, and Democrats should not play.”
