Washington, DC — Today, Indivisible’s Co-Executive Director Ezra Levin released the following statement:
“After months of refusing to provide specifics about their hostage demands, we finally know what Kevin McCarthy and House Republicans want in exchange for doing the bare minimum to avert a financial catastrophe. And it's just as bad as we expected. Literally take food off the table of millions of families just trying to get by? Help the ultra wealthy and big corporations get away with cheating on their taxes ? Strip away healthcare from children, veterans, and seniors? Saddle millions with crushing student debt? Pull the plug on new clean energy jobs? That’s your big pitch to the American people? LOL.
“The proposals we’re seeing are extreme and out of touch, and that’s a reflection of just how totally controlled by the fringes of his caucus McCarthy is.
“The House’s vulnerable GOP members are scared, and rightly so. They know just how unpopular this package is in their home districts. This vote will be a moment of truth after months of dodging basic questions.
“President Biden has remained steady and serious. The White House and the Democratic Leadership are steering the right course right now - refusing to give in to McCarthy’s hostage-taking tactics. We're winning the messaging fight, and we’re doing what Democrats need to do: fighting for everyone’s economic well-being.
“The handful of Democrats who are play-acting at bipartisanship need to get out of the way so that voters can clearly see the GOP circus for what it is. Again -- President Biden and the leadership are spot-on in their choice not to give in to these plays for attention.
“We’re telling our folks in the Indivisible movement: grab your popcorn, and grab your phone: light up the phones in every office, Democrat and Republican, to tell them to not drive the country into a national default.
“It’d be funny if it wasn’t so serious.“
