"Democrats must fight back even harder next time.”
Washington, D.C. — Today, Indivisible’s Chief Strategy Officer, Mary Small released the following statement on the House’s passage of the minibus:
“Instead of actually using their majority to govern, the dysfunctional Republican caucus wasted the last several months demanding hundreds of extreme and dangerous riders in the minibus, knowing they’ll need Democrats’ support to pass any bill. Democrats fought back - but now we need them to fight harder.
“Unfortunately, not only did Republicans manage to jam two harmful policy riders into the minibus, they also stalled the passage until the last minute bringing us to the brink of a painful shutdown. The first caps the DoJ’s budget to enforce antitrust laws, as part of Republicans’ attempt to block President Biden’s administration from taking on corporate monopolies who are cheating working families. The second rider changes what data the VA is allowed to report to federal background check databases, so that veterans who are struggling with their mental health – and are often at a heightened risk of suicide – can purchase firearms. Democrats have some work to do to reverse these harmful policy changes.
“This is the GOP’s gameplan - screw over working people and make our communities less safe. This raises the stakes for the March 22 deadline. Republicans will continue to use these government funding negotiations as a means to enact terrible, unpopular policies. Democrats must fight back even harder next time, and they have the leverage to do it. They’ll be putting up the votes for the bill to pass - so it’s up to Schumer and Jeffries to make sure they’re steering their caucus away from harmful MAGA priorities.”
