Washington, DC — Today, Leah Greencberg, Co-Executive Director of the Indivisible Project, issued the following statement:
“The American Rescue Plan delivers desperately needed relief to families and communities hit hard by the pandemic. It ensures we have the resources needed to bring this pandemic to and end. It dramatically reduces child poverty. These are huge victories, and we celebrate the unity of Democrats in delivering this crucial relief to the American people.
The incompetence of the previous administration worsened this crisis to unprecedented levels: Over half a million people have lost their lives to COVID-19; over a hundred thousand small businesses have permanently closed their doors; and workers have struggled with a patchwork social safety net while over 10 million remain out of work. The crisis has touched everyone’s lives but its cruelest and most catastrophic impacts have fallen on low-income families and communities of color.
“Since taking office, President Biden’s administration has treated this pandemic with the gravity it deserves - in stark contrast to his predecessor and Congressional Republicans. Every single Republican Congressperson and Senator voted against an enormously popular and necessary package. Every Republican voted against survival checks, extended unemployment, and lower healthcare costs. Every Republican voted against funds to keep small businesses open and for states and localities to safely re-open their economies. They don’t care about governing. All they have to offer is endless culture war grievances. And their constituents won’t forget where they stood in this moment of crisis.
The Congressional Progressive Caucus deserves credit for securing necessary assistance, like survival checks and aid for state and local governments, both of which were included in the final bill. Their leadership helped to make this package as strong and as popular as possible. And though this legislation will not deliver a $15 an hour minimum wage, we look forward to building off of the momentum created by workers and advocates to secure this and crucial labor rights advances in the future.”
