WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Indivisible’s co-executive director Leah Greenberg issued the following statement:
“For two decades, our country has pursued an occupation of Afghanistan at the cost of hundreds of thousands of lives. It took courage and conviction for President Biden to end this war now instead of continuing to allow it to drag on for another decade.
It should be lost on no one that the ferocious inside-the-Beltway reaction he has faced comes, in many cases, from the very people responsible for the tragic and disastrous outcomes in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the global war on terror - and from many who have lined their pockets as part of the military-industrial complex along the way.
While ending the war and bringing our troops home is an important first step, it is just one step of many that needs to be taken. The debt we owe to the Afghan people is vast. Congress and President Biden must expand access to visas and lift the current refugee cap, and support the Afghans who remain in Afghanistan with humanitarian aid.
The withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan cannot solely mark the end of the war in Afghanistan. It must be the beginning of the end of the military-first, imperialist foreign policy framework that has fueled senseless wars for generations. Nothing can rectify the pain and loss of decades of U.S. foreign policy failures, but ending this war has broken the painful and devastating pattern. It was the right decision.”
