Washington, DC — Today, Indivisible’s co-executive director Leah Greenberg issued the following statement:
“We are horrified by the rising violence in Palestine and Israel, and call for urgent U.S. engagement in de-escalating and reaching a ceasefire.
The devastation currently unfolding is a bleak recurrence of a decades-long cycle of violence. This crisis began with the evictions of Palestinian families who have been in their homes in Sheikh Jarrah for decades -- part of a broader pattern of illegal activity in the settlements to displace Palestinians by right-wing Israeli governments. Civilians are suffering and dying as extremists empower each other. We cannot accept this ongoing cycle of dispossession, violence, escalation, and retaliation, and we must not allow it to escalate further.
We are calling on President Biden to prove his commitment to human rights and diplomacy by de-escalating the immediate crisis and addressing the root causes of this cycle of violence, including the illegal and immoral evictions and displacements, the occupation, and de facto annexation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. And American aid should not support the violation of human rights and displacement of Palestinian families. We must achieve a just solution that addresses the immediate crisis and that ends the decades-long occupation.”
