Washington, DC — Today Mary Small, acting National Policy Director for Indivisible, issued the following statement:
“We have always supported strong, bold, and swift action to respond to this pandemic, provide aid to communities and families facing economic hardship, and set us on a path for equitable recovery. This meant passing Biden’s American Rescue Plan with critical improvements, and keeping promises made to the American public. While Democrats were correct to choose a legislative pathway that could not be endlessly blocked by Republican opposition, the budget reconciliation process is needlessly complicated, time consuming, and left out necessary provisions like guaranteed paid leave and increasing the minimum wage.
“Democrat’s insistence on maintaining arcane Senate rules will continue to burden the legislative process and prevent needed reforms. Some Democrats even shirked their mandate to act boldly in this moment by voting against a $15 an hour minimum wage and going out of their way to give less aid to unemployed workers. It is simply indefensible that any Democrat would participate in watering down the American Rescue Plan. We’re grateful for progressive champions who fought to strengthen this package to meet the needs of this moment.
“We urge the House to quickly pass this package to deliver overdue relief, but must acknowledge that if Democrats had realized the power of their majority and eliminated the filibuster, Americans would be seeing a more robust package that included wage increases, stronger public health protections, and much more.
“It’s time Democrats get out of their own way and scrap the filibuster and get on with the work the American people elected them to do.”
