Washington — Following the news Wednesday night of the White House trying to force a vote on the inadequate Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework (BIF) in order to claim to have taken action on climate ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Indivisible released the following reaction:
“Expecting progressives to vote for the BIF even as conservative Democrats spout new, terrible last-minute demands for the Build Back Better package is completely outrageous. Absolutely not,” said Leah Greenberg, Co-Executive Director of Indivisible.
“Progressives have been clear from the start that any true recovery must center climate. Going into Glasgow, President Biden needs to show that he can deliver on his commitment to cut climate pollution at least in half by 2030. Reducing our emissions is a critical goal, but it is outrageous to see the White House and Democratic Leadership rush a vote on the inadequate Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework in a desperate attempt to save face. Let us be clear, the provisions within the BIF are not the climate action we need, plain and simple,” said Mary Small, National Advocacy Director for Indivisible.
“Biden must go to the COP delivering on longstanding Democratic priorities for addressing the climate crisis. That means arriving with Build Back Better in hand, which will drastically cut emissions, create millions of climate jobs, center environmental justice, and make historic investments in a clean energy economy.
“If Biden is unable to deliver on real climate action passed into law by the COP, he must, at a minimum, have landed a deal, which includes a topline number, policy specifics that address the climate crisis, and have firm and public agreement on that deal from everyone. Given this low bar has not been passed, the House should temporarily vote no on BIF.
“Indivisible stands with progressives who have been clear from the start that any true recovery must deliver on long standing Democratic priorities including serious climate action and that passing Build Back Better must happen before BIF.”
