Washington, D.C. — Today, Indivisible’s Political Director Dani Negrete, released the following statement in response to the Senate Republicans blockage of the Right to Contraception Act introduced by Senators Markey, Hirono, and Duckworth:
"In case you were still wondering where the MAGA GOP stands on the right to contraception, take a peek at the Senate. The fact that GOP Senators collectively blocked a vote on protecting access to contraception should really ring every alarm bell. No matter how much they try to distance themselves from the fallout from the Dobbs decision and downplay the deep fears over attacks on reproductive rights, their blockage of vote on a bill literally called ‘Right to Contraception Act’ really gives away the game.
“The Right to Contraception Act is a bold – and evidently imperative – move by Senate Democrats to safeguard access to contraceptives for all Americans. Republicans’ decades-long war against contraception was supercharged by the overturn of Roe, and today Senate Republicans proved once again that MAGA is aiming to finish the job.
“The Republicans who blocked this bill today are saying clearly that they want to pave the way for a national abortion ban and a national ban on contraception. We can’t forget how many people did not believe the threats to Roe were real until it was overturned, despite Republicans calling for just that. We can’t afford to risk inaction again.
“Indivisible applauds Senate Democrats for bringing this bill for a vote, and taking this issue head on. We also applaud House Democrats for launching a discharge petition to force a vote on the bill and get every member on record here. Millions nationwide depend on contraception. Amidst relentless attacks on reproductive rights by MAGA extremists across all levels of government, Democrats must continue to be bold and fight hard to protect these fundamental rights."
