Washington, D.C. — Today, Andrew O’Neill, Indivisible’s National Advocacy Director, released the following statement on Senate Republicans’ plan to unilaterally change Senate rules so they can rush the confirmation of Trump’s executive branch nominees (more from WSJ Editorial Board):
“We’ve often criticized Democrats’ opposition strategy to Trump and Republicans’ assault on our health, economic security, and democracy - but not this time.
“Democrats are right to force recorded votes on every Trump nominee. Republicans are whining only because Trump is getting fussy - and to appease their king, Republicans will once again change the rules to screw over the American people.
“When the rules of budget reconciliation said Republicans couldn’t do tax breaks for the billionaires and corporations, they changed the rules to pretend that those tax cuts were ‘free.’ When the rules slow down the confirmation of Trump’s historically unqualified nominees, they change the rules to confirm MAGA loyalists en masse. Time and time again, Republicans in Congress choose to cede more power to Trump – endangering our communities and our democracy.
“The lesson here is that norms and decorum aren’t coming to save us. There’s no ‘business as usual’ as long as these Republicans remain in power. And we can’t afford political leaders who haven’t yet realized that.
“Democrats were right to drag out Trump’s nominees and make life hard for their GOP counterparts – that’s the necessary work of the opposition party. Each and every day, Senate Democrats should wake up and think of new ways to frustrate Trump’s authoritarian power consolidation. It’s clear that the upcoming government funding deadline is one of the biggest opportunities yet for Democrats to fight back. The only question is if they’ll do it.”
Indivisible is currently calling into Senate and House offices ahead of the federal budget deadline on September 30th, calling on Republicans and Democrats to rein in Trump’s regime and protect healthcare access. Below are the links to the call scripts:
- Democratic Senators (who didn’t cave in March)
- 10 Democratic Senators (who caved in March)
- Democratic Representative
- Republican Senator
- Republican Representative
