WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Congressional Progressive Caucus released their plan for legislative and executive action to expand abortion access post-Dobbs and following the passage of the Women’s Health Protection Act in the House of Representatives for the second time.
Meagan Hatcher-Mays, Director of Democracy Policy for Indivisible, issued the following statement in response:
“The CPC’s plan for immediate solutions – legislative and executive actions – is the exact leadership we need in this moment. Their slate makes it clear that the continual attacks on our constitutional rights demand a response from the full force of our government. The people will not accept inaction.
“The passage of the Women’s Health Protection Act in the House for the second time is an encouraging step towards forcing anti-choice Republican extremists to take a public position on the fundamental right to an abortion. Now is the time for Congress to shore up legislative protections for other fundamental rights that are on Republicans’ hit-list, like access to contraception, the right to interstate travel for abortion care, protect privacy and security of reproductive health data, and more. It’s our job to make sure their constituents know about their wildly unpopular positions and that they are held accountable in November. ”
“Progressives were successful in pushing the president to take further action on abortion access just this month, but more is needed. Indivisible backs the CPC’s demand that President Biden declare a public health emergency for abortion access, explore the use of federal property and resources to expand abortion access, safety, and affordability, and much more. We also continue to demand that President Biden commit to only nominating pro-choice judicial candidates to serve on the federal bench.”
