Washington, D.C. – Today, Andrew O’Neill, Indivisible’s National Advocacy Director, released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold a cruel and discriminatory ban on healthcare for trans young people in Tennessee:
“This decision is trash and trans people deserve better. Yet again, the Supreme Court has ruled to allow politically-motivated bans on access to healthcare that saves lives. No matter what the MAGA justices say, healthcare is a human right and that includes gender-affirming medical care for trans youth.
“Today’s decision applies only to Tennessee, but is a devastating reminder that healthcare for trans youth is under threats everywhere. Over 25 states have similar bans, and Republicans in Congress are working around the clock to pass a deadly reconciliation bill that would ban Medicaid funding for gender-affirming care for trans people of any age, as well as ban ACA plans from requiring this coverage as an Essential Health Benefit.
“Politicians should never be the deciders on who is deserving of healthcare and who is not. While Republicans - and even some Democrats - continue to cruelly target trans young people and their families with discriminatory restrictions on not just healthcare but also sports, military service, and more, we will never stop fighting for trans peoples’ right to control their own futures as fully equal members of society.”
