Washington, DC — Today, Indivisible released the following statements after the election of former Vice President Joe Biden as the next President of the United States, and Kamala Harris as the next Vice President of the United States:
“We won. And this is a big win. A record number of voters turned out amidst a pandemic to express the will of the people, and to put a historic ticket in the White House by clear margins. Come January, we’ll move forward together to swear in a President and Vice President who are serious about governing and will be expected to deliver on an agenda of dignity and justice for all,” said María Urbina, Acting Co-Executive Director and National Political Director of Indivisible. “Together, we can make good on the promise of an America that works for all of us, that prioritizes the most vulnerable, and that ensures we can all live with dignity. For now, we celebrate. This victory belongs to all of us.”
“James Buchanan. Andrew Johnson. Herbert Hoover. Is Donald John Trump the worst president in U.S. history or merely among the worst? Historians can now begin the debate, because his presidency is over. What we know is that his defeat came as the result of a historic rise in grassroots people power,” said Leah Greenberg, Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director of Indivisible. “It was fueled by racial justice organizers, immigrant rights organizers, climate justice organizers, youth organizers, and Indivisible leaders the country over. Despite rampant GOP efforts to undermine our democracy and suppress the vote, these organizers were a force that overcame every barrier.”
“Four years ago, we wrote the Indivisible Guide in hopes of helping a resistance to Donald Trump. Our message was simple: even in a frightening and dangerous moment, when Trump and his minions controlled every branch of the federal government, we the people still had power. We could use our power to resist -- and ultimately, to win. We could never have predicted what would come next: that millions of people would bring together their neighbors, their friends, their communities, to do just that. That we would become part of a grassroots movement that would help save the Affordable Care Act, build a Blue Wave in 2018, stand in fierce solidarity with communities under threat, and ultimately, kick Donald Trump out of office,” said Ezra Levin, Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director of Indivisible. “Tomorrow, the fight for our democracy continues. Today: We won.”
