Washington- In response to an outpouring of opposition Manchin’s permitting side deal was removed from the Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the government. Mary Small, National Advocacy Director at Indivisible, released the following statement:
“Today is a huge victory for environmental justice, the planet, and progressive power. This win belongs to frontline communities who lobbied hard to keep this dirty deal out of the CR, and the progressive champions like Rep. Grijalva and the 70 plus House members who fought the dirty deal and Sens. Merkley, Markey, Duckworth, Booker, Sanders, Warren, Cardin, and Van Hollen who opposed the deal in the Senate.
The policies outlined in that deal would have devastating impacts on our environment by advancing harmful projects like the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP), promoting oil and gas projects, and fast tracking permits for all fossil fuel projects by reducing environmental review and community input. These policies are harmful developments that will result in a structural loss of power, especially for those on the frontline of the fossil fuel fight. Given the intense debate over the provisions in the deal we look forward to debating the merits of this deal in a standalone vote.
In the wake of this win and over the next few months, we urge Leadership to focus on a winning legislative agenda that unifies the Democratic caucus. As we have seen with this fight, attaching controversial policies to must-pass vehicles is a recipe for infighting and failure. There is much to celebrate and Indivisible looks forward to a uniting Democratic agenda that allows us to celebrate the climate action, lower health care costs, and increased tax fairness passed in the Inflation Reduction Act.”

Indivisible began in 2016 as a viral guide to resisting Trump’s agenda. Today, the Indivisible movement is a network of thousands of local groups and millions of activists across every state. The Indivisible Project drives campaigns for bold progressive policies, lobbies Congress, and equips activists with tools to build lasting progressive power, everywhere. Together, we fight to defeat the rightwing takeover of American government and build an inclusive democracy.
