Washington, DC — Today, Indivisible’s co-executive director Leah Greenberg released the following statement:
“Republicans don’t care about working people. They're stripping health care and food assistance away from millions of Americans. Seniors in nursing homes will no longer have their long term care covered. Schools won’t provide free lunches to hungry children in need. And costs are going to continue to rise for all families. All so Elon Musk and a handful of other billionaires can have tax breaks to buy another yacht or take joy rides in space.
“Republicans had chance after chance to prove they cared about working people even a little bit. They could have voted for an amendment that would have affirmed, if any Americans died after losing health care due to this bill, it wouldn’t go into effect. They could have voted for an amendment committing that Medicaid and SNAP cuts wouldn’t pay for tax breaks for people making over a million dollars a year.
“Nope. Trump wants tax breaks for his friends, and they’re just going to deliver. At whatever costs to their constituents. They know this is unpopular. Trump wants it. They’re doing it anyway.”
“Even as attention turns to the Senate, our work in the House is not done. Indivisibles will continue to keep putting pressure on their House Republicans, and making sure every one of their constituents hears about what this bill will do.”
HOW THE INDIVISIBLE MOVEMENT HAS FOUGHT REPUBLICANS’ RECONCILIATION BILL
- Indivisible groups held 70 protests in Republican districts over April recess in Republican districts asking them to stop the cuts. For photos and videos, see:
- Indivisibles drove roughly 10,000 calls to House Republican offices alone about this reconciliation bill this year, and sent roughly 15,000 emails.
- In 22 House Republican districts and 4 Senate target states, roughly 700 people signed up to go door-to-door and talk to 5 neighbors each about how the cuts to Medicaid and SNAP are going to impact their local community, using Indivisible’s Neighbor2Neighbor neighborhood canvassing tool. Volunteers asked neighbors to take action, including calling their member of Congress and to help further spread the word in their community.
- To focus on key Republican Sen. Tom Tillis, Indivisibles drove over 560 calls to the office in the span of one hour during our patch through phonebank.
