VAN is the premier voter engagement tool used by candidates, campaigns, and progressive organizations like Indivisible to reach voters at the doors and on the phones, to empower them to use their voice and create real, lasting change for their communities and the country about the issues that matter to them and the candidates who will deliver on those issues.

Our Data staff can set up your phonebank or canvass, train you and your group, and follow up with best practices so that you can effectively achieve your group goal. Whether you want to connect with other progressive voters, persuade folks about upcoming legislation or elections, or encourage them to vote, there is staff available to support your work.

VAN is a powerful tool, and if you are a tech-savvy person who wants to dig into the data, you can sign up for admin access. As an admin, you can learn how to create your own canvass or phonebank, explore the full voterfile and analyze your program in real-time. Deepen your understanding of your turf so that you can effectively prepare successful programs.

VAN Admin Access

As an Indivisible group member, you can gain access to VAN for your group through Indivisible to start building lists, creating OpenVPBs and MiniVAN canvases, and more! Whether you’re experienced with using VAN with other organizations, or are brand new to the world that is VAN, our Data Team can help you learn VAN and start building your voter engagement strategy.

To Get Started

When filling out the VAN application form, please select “Admin Access Training” for the question “What type of request are you making today?” It will then ask you to choose between the two following options for your preferred profile type – Indivisible Group Member 1, and Indivisible Group Member 2. Please read the descriptions below and choose the right fit for you. After completing the application form, a member of the Data Team will be in contact with you in a follow up email that contains the required training series videos for your profile type. Please note the Indivisible Group Member 2 requires additional training before access.

Once you’ve completed your training series – these videos will be available to you 24/7 to refer back to in the future – you’ll attend a meeting with a member of the Data Team where they’ll answer any questions you have, ensure that you’re good on the basics of the system, and then they’ll create your VAN account.

Please note: While our group member admin profiles offer many functions for group members to perform on their own without the need for assistance from our Data Team, the ability to export data is not allowed with any of the admin access profiles offered to group members. For assistance with the exporting of data, please contact a member of the Data Team.

Profile Types

Profile Type Description: Indivisible Group Member 1

Dig into VAN and all it has to offer in voter engagement with this level of access! With this level of access you can create and share lists and folders, lookup voters, create OpenVPBs and MiniVAN canvasses, and pull and view reports and data. Start engaging voters at the group level like never before with this level of access!

Please note: This level of access requires a video training series to be completed before access is granted and does NOT have access to scores.

Profile Type Description : Indivisible Group Member 2

This level of access includes all of the same permissions as the level above, and includes the ability to build your lists based on modeled scores. Refine the community of voters you’re engaging even more with this enhanced level of access that includes using scores! Use scores in your list building to find the voters that you want to talk to and who want to hear from you about the issues you’re taking action on. You do not have to have this profile type in order to obtain lists that use scores.

Please note: This level of access requires an extra training series video in order for access to be granted for scores use. Friendly reminder that you do not have to have this profile in order to obtain lists that use scores. Our staff can still help you build lists using scores that we create for you and share with you in VAN.

We’re glad you’ve decided to write postcards with Indivisible’s Postcard Program! Below you’ll find helpful templates for the various types of scripts you can write on your postcards to send to voters in your community or across the country. The templates are divided into two categories: non-partisan electoral work and issue and candidate electoral work.

Best Practices: While we offer a range of options for you to choose from, we would like to highlight that social pressure messaging is the most effective type of postcard messaging with voters. We strongly encourage you to use this script for your outreach to voters.

Once you and your group have selected a message and template, make a copy and make it your own! If you make edits, please keep them short.
