Washington, DC — Today, Mary Small National Advocacy Director for Indivisible, issued the following statement after the Senate Democrats passed the Respect for Marriage Act, the bill that would enshrine marriage equality into federal law:
“We are celebrating the passage of the Respect for Marriage act, and applaud Majority Leader Schumer and Democrats for ensuring that everyone’s right to marriage is protected by federal law.
“For decades, Republicans and dark money interests fought relentlessly to strip fundamental rights like abortion, access to contraception, and gay and interracial marriage. While a handful of Republicans voted for marriage equality today, do not be fooled: it wasn’t because they suddenly developed a good conscience. They saw the electoral consequences of their MAGA extremist platform in the midterms and are looking to save face.
“The bottom line is: MAGA Republican extremism continues to threaten our most fundamental rights. With the impending Republican Majority in the House, Democrats have a short window to pass impactful legislation. Today, we’re celebrating this momentous passage of the Respect for Marriage Act that will protect each person’s right to marry whom they love and choose. We’re glad to see Democrats making the most of the last few weeks of this trifecta, and we’re looking forward to celebrating the passage of more impactful bills in the weeks ahead.”
