Washington, DC — Today, in response to Congress’s passage of the omnibus bill, Mary Small, Chief Strategy Officer for Indivisible, released the following statement:
“With a Republican House looming, people have been counting on Democrats to use every remaining moment of their trifecta to deliver as much of the Democratic agenda as possible, and today we get to celebrate some important and long-fought wins.
“Even after a long campaign year, Indivisible activists have been pushing their lawmakers on an ambitious final session plan. While not every item made it through, Democrats on the Hill and the constituents who’ve had their backs back home in their communities have a lot to celebrate.
“We won reforms to the Electoral Count Act that will prevent another January 6th-style insurrection. We won desperately needed increases in funding for the National Labor Relations Board. By refusing to cave to cynical Republican ploys , Democrats defeated several anti-immigrant poison pill amendments.
“At the end of this tough year for reproductive rights, it’s especially good to see Democrats using the last days of their trifecta to deliver for pregnant people and new parents. We won sizable increases in childcare funding. We won the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act--requiring reasonable accommodations for pregnant workers, and PUMP--ensuring nursing parents have the right to pump at work.
“Perhaps most importantly, Democrats took away a dangerous hostage that Republicans were salivating at the hopes of having next year. As Rep. McCarthy and his reckless crew of 13 threatened legislative retaliation, and openly schemed about using any vehicle they have to slash Social Security and Medicare, Democrats put their heads down and continued negotiating to protect us all from a new House Majority that is wholly unprepared to govern.
“This is what much of next year will look like: MAGA Republicans, desperate to out-extreme each other, ignoring the needs of everyday people. Their track record-–from the January 6th Select Committee to this eleventh hour funding bill–-prove that they won’t be partners in governance.
"Even while they were ultimately unable to land agreement on desperately needed provisions like protections for DACA recipients and an extension to the child tax credit, we commend Democrats on sticking with each other and with the negotiations to deliver these wins today."
