Washington, DC — In response to new reporting from ProPublica that ethically-challenged Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas received lavish gifts from right-wing donors without disclosing them, Meagan Hatcher-Mays, Indivisible’s Director of Democracy Policy, released the following statement:
“The revelation that Clarence Thomas received luxury gifts from a far-right Republican donor – including trips on private jets, yachts, and to private resorts – shows exactly why the public’s view of the Supreme Court is at an all-time low.
“The conservative majority of the Supreme Court, who were hand-selected by dark money groups, has no interest in acting ethically or policing their own behavior. Americans are tired of justices who act with this little regard to the law and as though they are immune from consequences – whether it’s Thomas and his lavish vacations or his colleague Samuel Alito’s alleged leak of a Supreme Court decision to right-wing anti-abortion activists, clearly the Court has gone off the rails and is in desperate need of reforms in order to restore its legitimacy.
“The Senate cannot ignore this, even if the MAGA Republicans in the House choose to. The Senate Judiciary Committee, and its Chairman Dick Durbin, must act immediately to investigate Clarence Thomas’s reported ethical lapses, and move quickly to hold hearings and votes on the Supreme Court Ethics, Transparency, and Recusal Act. The American people want to believe that the Court is fair, that the justices behave ethically, and that their decisions are free from undue political influence, and the only way this is possible is if Congress takes action to hold unethical justices accountable.”
