Washington, DC—Tonight, the Indivisible Project’s Co-Executive Director Ezra Levin released the following statement upon the White House’s announcement of the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh as associate justice on the Supreme Court:
“The fight to save the Supreme Court from the hands of Trump is on — and local Indivisible groups are ready for the fight.
“If Trump successfully installs Brett Kavanaugh onto the Supreme Court to replace Anthony Kennedy, Trumpism will infect the Court for a generation. The stakes are no less than the fate of Roe v. Wade, the Affordable Care Act, LGBTQ rights, and our democratic institutions.
“Our path to victory is narrow, but it’s there. Step one is keeping all Democratic senators together. This is not business as usual and there’s no time to waste. All Democratic senators must come out in opposition right now. A vocal, united Democratic front will focus pressure on Republican senators – forcing them to decide between appeasing Trump or preserving our fundamental rights.
“So now is the time for hardball, and Senator Chuck Schumer is up at bat. As Senate Minority Leader, it’s his job to keep the Democratic Caucus together. Three Democratic senators — Heitkamp, Manchin, and Donnelly — voted for Trump’s last Supreme Court nominee. We need them back on the side of justice. If Schumer fails to lead them there, we all will lose. Indivisibles across the country root for bold leadership — now is not the time to ask pretty please.
“Indivisible groups in all fifty states will be fighting tooth and nail to keep this extreme nominee from being seated on the court. Using the same grassroots opposition that stopped TrumpCare in spite of impossible odds, we will make it clear to both Democrats and Republicans that a ‘yes’ vote for Brett Kavanaugh is a vote to gut our rights and undermine our democratic institutions.
“But the fight to save the Supreme Court — and our democracy — doesn’t end here. To protect our country and our rights, we’ll have to retake Congress in November — and that’s what we intend to do.”
