Washington, DC—The Indivisible Project’s co-founders and co-executive directors Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin released the following statement:
“Democracy wins in the House. White nationalism loses.
“President Trump’s closing campaign argument was a full-throated endorsement of xenophobic, racist fear-mongering. Trump and the Republicans tried to rig the rules through voter suppression, gerrymandering, and a massive infusion of dark money.
“Their fear-mongering was rejected. Their dirty tricks were no match for Indivisibles and the grassroots resistance.
“They built a sea wall, but we built a bigger wave.
“Tonight’s victory was fueled by a historic, nationwide surge of grassroots energy and organizing, as everyday Americans — especially women — rose up across the country. The same local, volunteer Indivisible activists who in 2017 marched in the streets, crowded congressional offices in protest against TrumpCare, and turned Trump’s tax scam into a political liability, focused their energy in 2018 on supporting candidates, canvassing, phonebanking, and running for office themselves. Drop by drop, they built the wave.
“And what a wave it was. The incoming Democratic class of leaders is the future of the Party, and the future of the country. Following President Trump’s election, the Democratic Party was out to sea — at the lowest point in nearly a century — but now a record number of progressive women, people of color, and young people are taking the helm. The nation desperately needs their leadership, and we will finally have it.
“Democrats will now have power when Congress and state legislatures convene in January. They owe that power to the diverse grassroots coalition that made tonight’s victory possible. If Democrats hope to maintain and build on that power, they should be asking themselves one simple question: what do the wave builders want? Local Indivisibles look forward to visiting with their newly elected representatives at their new offices in person to provide the answer.”
