Washington, DC — Today, Indivisible announced its endorsement of Candace Valenzuela in the race for Texas’ Twenty-Fourth Congressional District:
"Candace is building a powerful and diverse grassroots movement to turn the Dallas-Fort Worth suburbs blue and fight for policies that lift up ordinary people, not corporate donors,” said IE Political Director Lucy Solomon. “She’ll fight for everyone to have access to affordable and secure housing, for investment in green jobs and infrastructure to tackle climate change head on, and for universal free pre-K to help struggling families and give all kids a chance to get ahead."
Candace is a former member of her local school board and is running Texas’ 24th Congressional district, a district that is emblematic of the fight to turn Texas blue. The district is one of the most rapidly diversifying districts in the country and Candace’s victory in the Democratic primary is a testament to the steadily growing political power of minority voters and will join Congress’ expanding roster of Members of color. Candace’s inspiring personal story demonstrates the awesome strength of American resilience while illustrating the unfortunate harshness of a rigged economic system. Candace now stands on the precipice of history as potentially the first Afro-Latina to be elected to Congress.
"Candace has faced many obstacles and overcome poverty and homelessness. She knows what it's like to struggle. Our worries are her worries. We want a better future for our children, a future where racial justice exists, our environment is thriving, healthcare is a right, our economy is working for everyone and our families are safe,” said Heather Thorton of Indivisible Grapevine Area. “We believe Candace will fight for that future in DC because we've seen her fight for it here. We're proud of the opportunity to make history by sending the first Afro-Latina to Congress, because it’s time Congress represented the people, all of us."
To earn Indivisible's national endorsement, a candidate must clear a tough three-stage process that requires broad support from local Indivisible group members at multiple points. All endorsed candidates must have a strong progressive platform aligned with our movement's values and the enthusiastic support of informed energized voters in their district.
