Washington, DC —
Today, Indivisible issued the following statements following Donald Trump’s nomination of District Court Judge Amy Coney Barrett to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the US Supreme Court:“Without Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the concept of equal protection under the law as we understand it today probably would not exist. Justice Ginsburg was a brilliant lawyer who dedicated her life to advancing gender equality and civil rights for everyone. Amy Coney Barrett cannot claim the same,” said Meagan Hatcher Mays, Director of Democracy Policy. “The idea that Amy Coney Barrett could replace RBG on the Supreme Court is an insult to RBG’s life and legacy. But Amy Coney Barrett isn’t the point: The fact that Republicans in the Senate are moving forward with a Supreme Court confirmation fight at all is a horrific abdication of their duties. Republicans have blocked coronavirus relief legislation for the past 134 days, yet are now poised to confirm a Supreme Court justice to the bench for life in just 38 days. Any Republican that goes along with this contemptible sham of a process will not escape the consequences.”
“With the last gasp of his foundering Administration, Trump has proven beyond a reasonable doubt that he is nothing more than the puppet of McConnell and establishment Republicans who pull his strings. This nominee will vote to strike down coverage for preexisting conditions,” said Ezra Levin, Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director of Indivisible. “She will vote against rights for women, for people of color, for LGBT people, for people with disabilities, for the young, the elderly, and the infirm. She champions big business and religious bigots over the rights of the American people. Years ago, Trump promised that he alone could fix it. Well the fix is in, and nobody is happier than Mitch McConnell, Washington insiders, and the donor class.”
“For years, the Supreme Court has been under the dire influence of conservative ideologues, but Amy Coney Barrett represents a pivotal vote to overturn Roe, the ACA, and to roll back LGBTQ rights. With her nomination, the legacy and precedent that has upheld these rights is now at risk. The world that Republicans want to see--one where poor and sick people are denied coverage, or where women are forced to back alleys and dangerous home remedies to terminate a pregnancy--is dangerously close to becoming a reality,” said Leah Greenberg, Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director of Indivisible. “This process moving forward is the height of hypocrisy and displays the depths of the GOP’s immorality. Amy Coney Barret’s nomination is a clear message to the American public and destroys any notion that the GOP are the principled patriotic statesmen they claim to be.”
