Washington, DC — Today, Meagan Hatcher-Mays, Director of Democracy Policy for Indivisible, issued the following statement:
“We are getting closer and closer to repairing our democracy and ending corruption and big money in our elections. Today’s hearing on S.1, the For the People Act, laid out the bill’s much-needed democracy and election reforms -- especially as we watch Republican-controlled state legislatures introduce hundreds of restrictive bills aimed at our sacred right to vote. This hearing was only possible because activists and voters worked hard to deliver Democrats a trifecta, but those same activists and voters haven’t yet had a chance to fully enjoy that victory given the ongoing attacks on our democracy at the state level.
“That’s why we launched the For The People Project -- to support their efforts to stop Republicans from their never-ending attempts to disenfranchise millions of voters. Rather than make their case to voters, or moderate their message in any way, Republicans have instead doubled-down on their bad ideas and remained in power based on their overarching political strategy: if you won’t vote for me, you shouldn’t vote at all.
"Fortunately, Indivisibles won’t stand for that. We have worked to get nearly every Democrat to cosponsor this bill in the Senate, and we will keep fighting until it gets an up or down vote on the Senate floor. Unfortunately, despite the widespread support this bill has, both in Congress and among voters, it stands no chance of passing unless we nix the filibuster. Voters handedly fired Mitch McConnell as Senate Majority Leader, but are still forced to live with his agenda because the filibuster hands him a veto. Democrats who claim to support voting rights and inclusive democracy must decide if they are willing to forfeit those principles just to maintain an arcane Senate rule that has no basis in the constitution or in the law.”

ABOUT THE INDIVISIBLE PROJECT
The Indivisible Project (501c4) is a social movement non-profit driven by a vision of a real democracy - of, by, and for the people. Indivisible began in 2016 as a viral guide to resisting Trump’s agenda. Today, the Indivisible movement is a network of thousands of local groups and millions of activists across every state. The Indivisible Project drives campaigns for bold progressive policies, lobbies Congress, and equips activists with tools to build lasting progressive power, everywhere. Together, we fight to defeat the rightwing takeover of American government and build an inclusive democracy.
