Washington, DC — Today, Leah Greencberg, Co-Executive Director of the Indivisible Project, issued the following statement:
“The appalling footage and reports from the Southern Border shows a Customs and Border Patrol that is out of control and willing to use any means necessary to prevent the safe arrival of refugees seeking asylum. This is a grotesque way to treat any human being, especially those fleeing a country reeling from multiple deadly natural disasters, political violence, sustained food insecurity and extreme poverty.
When we fought to defeat Donald Trump, we fought for a just and humane immigration system that treats asylum-seekers with dignity. These events demonstrate all too painfully that the abuses of the hateful, racist and dehumanizing deportation machine are not limited to one party or President.
“On the campaign trail, President Biden repeatedly touted that we were ‘in a battle for the soul of this nation.’ It is a battle we have yet to win. President Biden’s administration must immediately halt removals to Haiti and restore a safe and fair asylum process for Haitians and others. That means ending its indefensible use of a Trump-Stephen Miller policy, Title 42, immediately working to deliver much needed humanitarian relief, and exploring avenues to avenues for protection of Haitian immigrants, including Deferred Enforced Departure.

Indivisible began in 2016 as a viral guide to resisting Trump’s agenda. Today, the Indivisible movement is a network of thousands of local groups and millions of activists across every state. The Indivisible Project drives campaigns for bold progressive policies, lobbies Congress, and equips activists with tools to build lasting progressive power, everywhere. Together, we fight to defeat the rightwing takeover of American government and build an inclusive democracy.
