Washington, DC — Today, Meagan Hatcher-Mays, Director of Democracy Policy, issued the following statement after President Joe Biden announced Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as his nominee to replace Justice Stephen Breyer on the nation’s highest court:
“We applaud President Biden’s decision to nominate Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first Black woman on the Supreme Court. Judge Jackson is an exceptional pick in more ways than one – in addition to being a highly qualified lawyer and respected judge, she will bring much-needed professional diversity to the Supreme Court’s bench. Not since former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall retired has there been a justice with extensive criminal defense experience.
“Women and people of color need a justice with a strong record as a progressive that will finally fight for them. Ketanji Brown Jackson is that justice. Her time as a public defender allowed her to represent those who have the most at stake. That perspective is badly needed and long overdue on the court. We’re excited to support her through this confirmation process that has already been filled with racist and sexist attacks from Republicans.
“As excited as we are to see Judge Jackson make history, we know that one new justice won’t be enough to restore balance to the Supreme Court itself, whose conservative justices have happily turned the institution into a weapon in our new culture wars. The Court is no longer an institution that we can count on to protect our constitutional rights or our democracy. Judge Jackson will be a welcome addition to the Court, but if we really want to change things, we must add seats as well. Without four new justices, the conservative majority will gleefully continue the damage. ”
