Washington, DC — Today, Meagan Hatcher-Mays, Director of Democracy Policy for Indivisible, issued the following statement after the successful Senate vote to confirm Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court of the United States:
“The Senate’s confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is historic. It’s not often we can describe a Senate vote as ‘joyous,’ but that’s exactly what this was – for the first time in the Supreme Court’s 233-year history, a Black woman will serve as a justice. And not just any Black woman, but a Black woman who is eminently qualified, patient, and smart. Judge Jackson will also be the first public defender to serve on the Supreme Court, providing a much-needed shift in perspective for an institution stacked with former prosecutors.
“Future Justice Jackson’s confirmation is also incredibly timely. The Court is suffering from several self-inflicted wounds to its reputation, from the severe ethical lapses of Justice Thomas to the ongoing use of the secretive ‘shadow docket’ to make sweeping rulings that have national implications for environmental regulations, abortion rights, immigrant rights, and more. Unsurprisingly, the public’s trust in the Court is at an all-time low.
“Ketanji Brown Jackson’s presence on the Supreme Court may boost the Court’s popularity in the short term – Jackson is incredibly popular herself – but she alone cannot erase the stain of the Court’s ongoing attacks on our democracy and constitutional rights. Only court expansion can do that. Senate Democrats must now move quickly to add seats to the Supreme Court, and send Ketanji Brown Jackson four new colleagues.”
