House Democrats have one more chance to be on the right side of history on the anti-immigrant Laken Riley Act.
With the bill passing in the Senate, where Republicans not only blocked amendments that would limit the dangers of the bill, but made it even more harmful by expanding the reasons why an undocumented immigrant can be indefinitely detained.
Then, this new iteration of the bill comes back to the House for Members of Congress to vote on again. If it passes there, it goes to Trump’s desk where he’ll sign it into law. And we know that his administration will use this bill as justification for targeting and criminalizing all noncitizens, including children and Dreamers.
Last time the bill was voted on in the House, 48 Democrats voted in support. Given the Republican’s razor thin majority and the fact that 3 members of their caucus didn’t vote, the vote could have failed if all Democrats had voted no.
But now they have another opportunity to stand up against Republicans’ anti-immigrant fear mongering and kill this bill. There is absolutely no reason that any Democrats should do Trump’s work for him and greenlight Republicans' anti-immigrant agenda. They have one last chance to show us that they will stand up against harmful and inhumane immigration policies.
They’ve already shown us that they can stand united against Republican fear mongering: last week almost every House Democrat voted MAGA’s Child Predator Empowerment Act, rejecting Republicans’ extreme anti-trans agenda. They need to bring that same energy to Republicans’ extreme anti-immigrant agenda next.

House Democrats cannot lend support for Republicans’ anti-immigrant agenda

I’m a constituent from [part of state], and I’m calling to tell [Representative] that they have one more chance to block the Laken Riley Act from becoming law, after Senate Republicans took the bill from bad to worse.
The bill exploits the tragic death of Laken Riley to sow widespread fear of immigrant communities, and it’s disappointing that when it originally passed in the House, that 48 Democrats fell for this false narrative and voted yes.
I know that Democrats can do better than that. I was thankful that last week [Representative] had the courage to stand up alongside almost every other House Democrat and fight back against Republicans’ anti-trans fear mongering. I would like to see Democrats use that same courage to fight back against dangerous, anti-immigrant attacks next.
