Thank Your Democratic Senator for Voting No on S. 5, the Laken Riley Act

First thing Friday morning, the Senate convened and invoked cloture on S.5, the Laken Riley Act so that it can move forward to a vote on final passage. 

This bill will unjustly target and criminalize all noncitizens and fuel more dangerous rhetoric about immigration. But that was the point for Republicans all along – to exploit the tragic death of Laken Riley to fuel their anti-immigrant fear mongering

Senate Democrats could have united against the bill and used the filibuster to stop it in its tracks, but 10 Democrats voted for it, even though Republicans were not interested in having an actual conversation about S.5 and blocked amendments that would limit the dangers of this bill. 

But 35 Democrats voted against ending debate and moving to the final vote, making it clear that they didn’t buy into  Republicans’ dangerous anti-immigrant rhetoric. You can find out if your Senator voted against the bill here. This was a significant improvement from the original vote to open debate on S.5, where only 9 Democrats voted no.  

These senators stood strong against Republican efforts to dehumanize and harm immigrant communities.
