PHOENIX — The Indivisible Project’s state and local policy manager Jiggy Athilingam released the following statement after the Arizona House failed to pass HB 2616:
“Yesterday marked a milestone in our months-long battle to defend democracy in Arizona this session. HB 2616 would have made it a crime to register voters as part of a job unless the person worked for a political party and it failed 32-28 on the House floor.
“Since the beginning of the session, Indivisibles packed the committee hearing for HB 2616 and made hundreds of calls to their legislators to fight back against anti-democratic bills including HB 2616. We are thrilled that the Arizona House listened to the will of their constituents and voted against HB 2616.
“We have been disturbed that the Republican-controlled legislature’s response to the record-breaking voter turnout in Arizona in 2018 has been to make voting, voter registration and qualifying ballot initiatives more difficult for the people of Arizona. We should instead be taking positive steps to encourage even more participation by making voting as easy as possible. After celebrating their win today, Arizona Indivisibles are ready to keep the fighting going to stop any anti-democratic bills that are still in the hopper.”
