Indivisible: Give DC Statehood
Washington, DC — Today, Meagan Hatcher-Mays, Director of Democracy Policy, issued the following statement:
“Last year, when the House held its historic vote on D.C. Statehood, it passed. But because of Mitch McConnell’s obstruction, it died in the Senate. Today, with a new Majority Leader, the Senate will now have a chance to make history as well. The introduction of S. 51, the Washington, D.C. Admission Act, reflects the growing support across the country to end the disenfranchisement of the district's 700,000 residents. In addition to being a critical democracy reform, D.C. statehood is also a racial justice issue. Historically, conservative politicians have prevented D.C. from becoming a state to prevent D.C.’s black residents from building or wielding their political power. It’s past time to give district residents a voice in Congress and the power to govern its own affairs.”

ABOUT THE INDIVISIBLE PROJECT
The Indivisible Project (501c4) is a social movement non-profit driven by a vision of a real democracy - of, by, and for the people. Indivisible began in 2016 as a viral guide to resisting Trump’s agenda. Today, the Indivisible movement is a network of thousands of local groups and millions of activists across every state. The Indivisible Project drives campaigns for bold progressive policies, lobbies Congress, and equips activists with tools to build lasting progressive power, everywhere. Together, we fight to defeat the rightwing takeover of American government and build an inclusive democracy.
