Washington, DC—Following Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement announcement this week, the Indivisible Project has released a two-pronged strategy in the Supreme Court fight.
Indivisible’s strategy, circulated to the national network of local Indivisible groups on Thursday night, includes a grassroots advocacy campaign to hold key Democrats together and target Republicans to get to 51 votes. Indivisible also announced the launch of a nationwide phone bank targeting 5 key Senate races in the upcoming midterm elections.
“Conventional wisdom said that the resistance didn’t stand a chance to defeat TrumpCare. But we fought and we won,” the Indivisible Project said in an email to Indivisible groups. “There’s a similarly narrow pathway to victory to save the Supreme Court.”
Indivisible groups will be calling their Senate offices and using the July 4th recess to find their Senators at public events and pressure them on their home turf. Recognizing that Democrats have no mechanisms at their disposal to single-handedly stop a Trump nomination, Indivisible’s resource includes additional guidance for the constituents of the three Democrats who voted to confirm Neil Gorsuch and two Republicans who’ve supported reproductive rights, Sen. Susan Collins and Sen. Lisa Murkowski.
“We need to let both Republicans and Democrats know that a ‘yes’ vote on Trump’s nominee is politically toxic, and it’ll follow them for the rest of their careers,” the Indivisible Project said.
To restore Democratic control of the Senate, Indivisible is focused on defeating and replacing Republicans in Arizona, Mississippi, Nevada, Texas, and Tennessee. Indivisibles in contested states will be continuing to campaign non-stop, while volunteers in all 50 states will partake in a large phone banking operation focused on reaching progressives early in the cycle.
