Washington, DC — Today, Indivisible announced its endorsement of Greg Casar for Texas’ 35th congressional district. The announcement is the latest for the progressive grassroots organization, which endorses throughout each election cycle:
“We know Greg Casar is ready to join the national fight to pass bold progressive policies, help working people, and defend our democracy. As a member of Congress, he’ll still be an organizer at heart, the kind of activist legislator we need more of to win real change” said Leah Greenberg, co-founder and co-executive director of Indivisible. “Casar has been outspoken in his support for progressive policies like fair hiring initiatives like ‘banning-the-box', fighting for a living wage, and many other reforms that have significantly improved the lives of people in Austin. ”
Greg Casar served as an Austin City Councilmember from 2014, when he made history as the youngest person ever elected to the position. In his tenure, Casar has been a progressive champion for his constituents–from establishing paid sick leave for Austin workers and securing funding for the largest affordable housing investment in the South to pushing the Austin Police Department to clear the city’s decades-long rape kit backlog and ending arrests and fines for personal marijuana possession. He’s proven he is ready to fight for progressive values at the local level, and will take that same spirit to Congress. Casar is one of three candidates vying for the Democratic nomination to represent the heavily Hispanic majority-minority district.
“Greg is a fierce advocate for working families and is eager to show up to get things done for his community. He’s taken a bold stance on paid sick leave, fair chance hiring, and combating climate change,” said Trish Contreras, leader of Indivisible Austin. “More importantly, Greg is about action. When Ted Cruz abandoned Texas during the Winter storm, Greg was serving the community by bringing blankets and food to people without power. I know he will continue to put his constituents first when we send him to Congress.”
The endorsement from one of the leading national progressive organizations will be a boost for the candidate facing a competitive primary contest.
To earn Indivisible’s national endorsement, a candidate must clear a tough three-stage process that requires broad support from local Indivisible group members at multiple points. All endorsed candidates must have a strong progressive platform aligned with our movement’s values and the enthusiastic support of informed energized voters in their district.
