Atlanta, GA — Today, Indivisible Georgia Sixth District released the following statement in response to the passage of S.B. 202 by Republican state legislators and Governor Kemp:
“To put it simply: Governor Kemp and his fellow Republicans in the state legislature’s decision to rush S.B. 202 last night was racially motivated and an act of cowardice after the record-high turnout of Black, brown, and democratic voters in 2020. Republicans in Georgia -- and all over the country -- are scared they are about to lose their jobs, and rather than do the work to win over these voters, with good policy, they’re pulling from the old Republican playbook: rig our democracy.
Indivisibles in Georgia’s Sixth District and across the state are thankful that both Senators Warnock and Ossoff support the quickest and most effective solution to safeguarding our democracy from cowardly lawmakers: the For the People Act (S. 1). We also want to thank Representative McBath for co-sponsoring the For the People Act (H.R. 1) when it was in the House. Now, more than ever, we are calling on our Senators to champion the passage of a clean For the People Act by any means necessary -- including getting rid of the racist filibuster.”
Indivisibles in Georgia played a critical role in historically flipping the state in 2020. Indivisible Georgia Sixth District registered hundreds of voters throughout the year. Leading up to the Senate runoff, Indivisibles across the state sent over 1 million text messages, called over 800,000 voters, dropped educational literature at thousands of doors across metro Atlanta and other critical areas, stood outside of polling locations and encouraged voters to "triple their vote", worked at the polls, coordinated rides to the polls, and more. Since, they’ve been working to salvage and safeguard our democracy after four years of Trump by meeting with lawmakers, driving calls to Senators and representatives, and writing LTEs (see: NYT -- Republican Efforts to Restrict Voting). Today, Indivisibles from GA-6 went to Governor’s Mansion and capitol and protested (B-Roll footage here).
