New York, NY — The Indivisible Project’s State Policy Manager Lauren Boc released the following statement after the New York State Senate and Assembly released their budget proposals:
“We applaud the New York State Senate and Assembly for their decision to include support for small-donor matching in their one-house budgets. The move signals that the grassroots have been heard but the negotiation process is just beginning. Now, we will continue our work to ensure that both chambers commit to building a more fair and equitable democratic process by, among other policies, including small-donor matching in the final budget.
“Small-donor matching is a racial justice fight just as much as an economic one. Matching empowers communities of color by amplifying the strength of small contributions and shifting influence away from big donors. This additional funding would provide critical financial support to those who often feel like they can’t afford to run. Governor Cuomo, Leader Stewart-Cousins and Speaker Heastie have all supported similar measures in the past. We urge them to stay supportive of small-donor matching in the final budget.
“The developments in the Senate and Asssembly showed us that the grassroots’ efforts have made an impact but also that we still have work to do in New York to fix our elections. In the 2018 elections, New Yorkers made it clear they wanted progressive change in Albany. They took down the Independent Democratic Conference, elected new progressives at all levels of elected office, and advocated for bold initiatives. Indivisibles are committed to continuing the fight for a better electoral process.”
