Washington, DC — Today, Meagan Hatcher-Mays, Director of Democracy Policy for Indivisible, issued the following statement about the introduction of H.R. 1, the For the People Act, in the House of Representatives:
“Our democracy has been rigged in favor of white people and the wealthy from the jump. And huge corporations and special interests have only entrenched their power over the years, paying big money to influence the outcome of our elections and support legislators who will protect them from accountability. Those same legislators have returned the favor by making it almost impossible for the people -- mostly Black people and people of color -- to vote or otherwise have a say in our democracy. The For the People Act would be a massive step toward finally, for the first time, establishing a democracy in this country that works by, for, and of the people.
For two years, since the first time the For the People Act was introduced, Indivisibles have been making calls, writing letters, and visiting their representatives to demand they pass structural democracy reform legislation. Indivisibles rallied across over 160 district offices for the “Whose House? Our House!” day of action in support of passing H.R. 1 in 2019. Today’s introduction of H.R. 1, the For the People Act, demonstrates one thing: their voices were heard. The For the People Act is a monumental package of democracy reforms that will center voters by dismantling the system that allows big money to call the shots in politics.
The House has shown they are ready to fight for a truly inclusive and healthy democracy. The Senate must now follow suit and move this legislation forward.”
