Washington, DC — Today, Meagan Hatcher-Mays, Director of Democracy Policy, issued the following statement after the Senate failed to pass an amendment to allow documents and new witnesses, like former National Security Adviser John Bolton, to testify in Donald Trump’s impeachment trial:
“Four Republicans. We only needed four Republicans to vote the right way to allow witness testimony and documents into Trump's impeachment trial. Instead, Republicans once again showed where their loyalties truly lie: not with our Constitution, not with our democracy, but with the most corrupt president in American history. By rejecting witnesses and documents, Republicans have created an alternative system of justice solely for Trump, all so he can be acquitted for blatantly attempting to hijack yet another presidential election. Not only is Trump a corrupt criminal, but the entire Republican party are also his co-conspirators.
“This vote is a slap in the face to the American people—the overwhelming majority of whom wanted a fair impeachment trial that included relevant witnesses and documents. In every other impeachment trial, not to mention every other trial that's ever been conducted in United States history, there have been documents and witnesses. This impeachment trial is an absolute sham and was rigged from the beginning by Mitch McConnell and Trump himself. Republicans refused to allow the public to hear from witnesses because they knew John Bolton’s testimony about Trump’s deliberate and intentional efforts to steal the 2020 election would dismantle every flimsy defense they have mounted against removing him from office.
“Over the course of this process, Indivisibles and other grassroots activists have placed immense pressure on their senators to support a fair and open trial. Senators who feigned moderation or political courage can rest assured they will hear from their constituents about today’s vote. We promised to make this vote the most consequential vote of a Senator’s career, and that’s a promise we intend to keep at the ballot box this year.”
