Washington, DC — The Indivisible Project’s state and local policy manager Jiggy Athilingam released the following statement after the Arizona Senate’s passage of SB 1188:
“What the Republican-controlled Arizona Legislature did today is an affront to democracy and the will of the people. SB 1188 would purge over 260,000 Arizonans from the early voter rolls and is a deliberate attempt to make it harder for Arizonans to participate in the democratic process. Republicans in the legislature have shown that they want to silence the people’s voice to ensure that only the voices of those already in power are heard.
“But Indivisible groups across the state have refused to stay silent. They have made hundreds of calls to their state legislators to demand that they vote against the various anti-democratic bills that keep popping up in the legislature. Groups have shown up to just about all committee hearings to oppose these attacks on democracy and have made it clear they won’t take this sitting down. They are prepared to fight to ensure this measure is defeated. What we saw today was a disappointment but we are committed to continuing to fight against SB 1188 in the House and will stay vigilant to protect against other attacks of democracy in Arizona.”
