Washington, DC — The Indivisible Project’s co-executive director Leah Greenberg released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1:
“For too long, the rules of our democracy have been rigged in favor of the wealthy and the white. Today’s passage of H.R. 1 dramatically raises the bar as we continue to work to create a democracy that includes and represents us all. Though Republicans predictably deployed a last-minute anti-immigrant Hail Mary to attempt to divide Democrats, it proved futile in the end. We commend Democrats — with a few disappointing defections — for standing up to Republicans’ dirty efforts to torpedo this bill.
“Earlier this year, Indivisibles across the country held our biggest day of action yet to tell Congress to pass H.R. 1 without watering it down or breaking it up. Clearly, they listened. By prioritizing a strong H.R. 1 bill, House Democrats signaled that they will fight the big fights and push for a truly inclusive and healthy democracy. If we are to have a chance of solving the many problems that lie before us, it’s essential to first un-rig the rules and ensure that our government is truly led by the people. We commend Democrats for their vote today, and see this as the new baseline for what’s possible. We look forward to working to build upon today’s success to make transformative democracy reform a reality.”
