Washington, DC—Today, Indivisible Project co-executive director Ezra Levin released the following statement upon Justice Anthony Kennedy’s announcement of his plans to retire from the Supreme Court:
“Republicans stole a Supreme Court seat from President Obama and then changed the Senate rules in order to confirm Trump’s radical pick, Neil Gorsuch. And the results have already been devastating: the Supreme Court has validated Trump’s bigoted Muslim ban, dealt a huge blow to organized labor, and undermined access to abortion services. If Trump gets another seat on the court, at risk will be Roe v. Wade, the Affordable Care Act, marriage equality, and our democratic institutions. And while Mitch McConnell and the Republicans held up President Obama’s nominee for eight months, now they’re going to try to jam a Trump pick through before the people can express their opinion in November.
“Republicans couldn’t repeal the Affordable Care Act or end Planned Parenthood funding through the legislative process, so now they’re going to try to pack the Supreme Court to accomplish the same ends. Every Democrat in the Senate should fight this with everything they’ve got. Every Indivisible group will stand behind them.”
