“H.R. 1 is Why We Built the Blue Wave”
Washington, DC—The Indivisible Project’s co-executive director Ezra Levin released the following statement in support of the democracy reform legislation, H.R. 1.
“The Indivisible movement started organizing after Trump was elected, but it wasn’t just about Trump — it was about saving American democracy. H.R. 1 is a critical step toward that goal and passing this bill is how Democrats can show they are listening to those who put them back in power in the House. Yesterday across the country, local Indivisible groups rallied to tell the newly-seated 116th Congress to pass H.R. 1 without watering it down or breaking it up. With more than 160 events nationwide, this is our biggest day of action yet.
“Indivisibles are prioritizing combating threats to American democracy. This past fall, we surveyed Indivisible group members directly and spoke with grassroots groups across the country to learn about their most urgent concerns. They identified democracy reforms — empowering voters, eliminating big dark money in politics, and rooting out corruption at all levels of government — as their top priority. As Republicans continue working to serve corporate interests and specifically to disenfranchise people of color, Democrats need to show their commitment to ensuring that everyone has the unimpeded right to participate in our democracy.
“By choosing to prioritize strengthening our democracy through H.R. 1, the Democrats are signaling that they are ready to fight the big fights and create a truly inclusive and healthy democracy. If we are to have a chance at solving the many problems that lie before us, it’s essential to first prioritize un-rigging the rules and ensuring that our government is truly led by the people.”
