MoveOn, United We Dream, Indivisible, and other groups call for national action on Tuesday, the day Trump intends to deliver a State of the Union address.
Washington, DC—During a television appearance tonight on MSNBC’s All In with Chris Hayes, Rep. Katie Hill (CA-25) announced that Tuesday, January 29 will be a National Day of Action to end the government shutdown without Donald Trump’s border wall in what is expected to be one of the biggest days of national protest since the shutdown began over a month ago.
On Tuesday, grassroots activists will participate in “Shut Down the Wall / Open the Government” actions pressuring Senate Republicans across the country. They will demand that Sen. Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans stop marching in lockstep with Trump and that they reopen the government without giving into Trump’s anti-immigrant policies, including his racist border wall. Events will take place outside congressional offices and closed federal government sites (including parks, office buildings, and community centers with canceled programs).
Rep. Hill, in discussing actions being planned by organizations including MoveOn, Indivisible, United We Dream, and allies across the entire progressive movement, emphasized the impact of the #TrumpShutdown and the relentless attacks from the Trump administration on immigrants, people seeking asylum, federal workers, and communities nationwide. Other organizations supporting the Day of Action include act.tv, Action Together Network, AFT, Be A Hero Campaign, Bend the Arc Jewish Action, Center For Popular Democracy, CenterLink: The Community of LGBT Centers, Community Change Action, CREDO, DPBell & Associates, EqualVoteLocal, FIRM Action, Florida Immigrant Coalition, Indivisible 92116, Indivisible Illinois, Indivisible Metro East, Mainers for Accountable Leadership, Mi Familia Vota, NJ 11th for Change, NJ7 Forward, Oil Change USA, PDA, People For the American Way, People’s Action, Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS), Stand Indivisible AZ, Tax March, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, UltraViolet, United We Dream, and URGE: Unite for Reproductive & Gender Equity.
The date—Tuesday, January 29—is the day that Trump intends to deliver his State of the Union Address somewhere. But people across the country are focused on the real state of the union: the costs of Trump and the Republicans’ racist shutdown and their anti-immigrant policies to our jobs, communities, economy, and society.

“We will not let Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress hold America hostage as they attempt to divide us against each other for their devastating and self-enriching agenda,” said Anna Galland, Executive Director of MoveOn Civic Action. “MoveOn and the progressive movement support federal workers, those affected by lack of essential government programs, and stand with immigrants and asylum seekers. Trump can not divide us. Together, we demand McConnell and Congressional Republicans shut down the wall and open the government.”
"Trump killed DACA and is going after our families but we and the majority of Americans know that Trump is wrong,” said Eli Cuna, United We Dream National Field Director. “Immigrant youth are mobilizing nationwide to stand with workers impacted by the shutdown and tell Donald Trump and Congress to reopen the government and shut down the racist wall."
"It's been over a month, 800,000 federal workers remain without pay, and disruptions are happening across our government. Thousands of American families are suffering," said Leah Greenberg, Co-Executive Director of the Indivisible Project. "The National Day of Action is a cross-movement day of solidarity. It's about saying no to Trump's wall, his anti-immigrant agenda, and his hostage-taking tactics. It's also about standing up to a bully and fighting to protect all of our values, together."
