WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Indivisible’s National Advocacy Director, Andrew O’Neill, released the following statement in support of the Kaine/Massie-Khanna War Powers Resolutions in the House and Senate:
“The American people do not want war. This crisis is Netanyahu’s mess, and deeper U.S. involvement would not only endanger American troops, but risk escalating into a full-scale regional conflict.
“Unfortunately, President Trump is pouring fuel on the fire. Ordering a foreign city of 10 million to evacuate overnight in a social media post, threatening to assassinate another country’s leader—just days after sitting at the diplomatic table. We know exactly who he is: a would-be authoritarian who cannot be trusted to deescalate this crisis or protect civilian lives, let alone keep U.S. troops safe.
“Thankfully, the Constitution is clear: only Congress can declare war. We commend Senator Kaine and Representatives Khanna and Massie for introducing resolutions to ensure this administration cannot bypass this fundamental check, plunging us into a conflict that will cost countless lives, drain our resources, and destabilize entire regions.
“We all know the cost of war–trillions of tax dollars wasted, innocent lives lost, and generations of instability and distrust. In just the past six days, hundreds of innocent Iranians and dozens of Israelis have been killed. Millions are living in fear, wondering if their homes will be the next target.
“Diplomacy must come first. We need to deescalate this conflict, save lives, and keep American troops out of harm’s way. Indivisible will keep pushing to make it clear to Congress–and to Trump: No war with Iran.”
Indivisible is driving constituent calls to Senate and Congressional offices as part of the ‘No War with Iran’ campaign, urging all to co-sponsor the Khanna-Massie resolution in the House and the Kaine resolution in the Senate. Below is an excerpt from the call scripts (House; Senate):
Hi, my name is [Your Name], and I’m a constituent from [Your City, State].
I’m alarmed by the prospect of war with Iran, and strongly oppose the United States becoming involved. We cannot risk the devastating human and economic cost of another never-ending war in the Middle East. We need peace and diplomacy, not bombs and bloodshed.
Will [Senator name] oppose war with Iran, and sign on to Senator Kaine’s War Powers Resolution? As their constituent, I expect to see them advocating against this war.
