Washington, DC — Today, Meagan Hatcher Mays, Director of Democracy Policy at Indivisible, issued the following statement after the Senate voted to confirm Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court of the United States:
“Today, Mitch McConnell and his Republican cronies confirmed Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, tarnishing the legacy of the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and undermining whatever remaining faith the public still had in the court as an institution. Despite Republicans' attempts to obfuscate Barrett's extreme record, let's be clear: the Supreme Court is now under the control of six far-right ideologues who were chosen and confirmed not to administer justice but to administer wins to the Republican party.
"For months, the GOP has ignored pandemic relief for millions of Americans affected by COVID-19. Instead, they worked overtime to confirm a justice who refuses to say whether or not climate change is real, whether or not systemic racism exists, or whether or not voter intimidation is illegal. Republicans didn't even take a break when members of their own caucus -- including Donald Trump himself -- were infected with COVID-19. That's how badly Trump and McConnell want to steal our healthcare and criminalize abortion.
“Amy Coney Barrett is a threat to the health and safety of millions of Americans. Mitch McConnell and the Republican Senate are a threat to the health and safety of our very democracy. And despite what McConnell may claim from the Senate floor, this isn't over. If he thinks that we "won't be able to do much about this," he should think again. We can and will defeat his disastrous agenda and restore balance to the courts. It all starts on November 3."
