If we want to roll back abortion bans and pass federal legislation to protect reproductive freedom for all, we urgently need to put a spotlight on reproductive rights and MAGA extremism. The anniversary of SCOTUS’s Dobbs decision is the best time to do that. Join us from June 21-24 by hosting press-friendly events and talking to voters all over the country.
June 24th marks two years since the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade and federal constitutional protections for abortion. Under the guise of "states' rights," Trump and his MAGA extremist cronies have enabled states to enact draconian laws, creating a nightmare reality where a 10-year-old rape victim had to flee Indiana to obtain an abortion. Where individuals like Kate Cox and Brittany Watts became tragic symbols of the barbaric consequences of these policies. Their stories are not anomalies; they are the direct result of Trump’s Supreme Court legacy—a legacy he boasts about at every turn.
The implications of the upcoming election couldn’t be more dire. A Trump victory, bolstered by a Republican Senate, would pave the way for a future where the Supreme Court and lower courts are stacked even further against reproductive rights. It’s a future where ideological rulings could obliterate even more of our choices and freedoms.
But we have the people and the power to fight back. In 2022, we beat the odds by focusing on MAGA extremism and reproductive rights, and we can do it again. That is why we are kicking off our 2024 electoral program with a Weekend of Action uplifting the anniversary of the Dobbs decision. During this Majority Over MAGA Weekend of Action, we are asking groups to host press-friendly events to shine a light on MAGA extremism and the power of the movement fighting back against it.
Why June 21-24?
This election cycle, abortion is the ultimate thorn in the side of the GOP. From Trump to Kari Lake in Arizona to Mike Lawler in New York, every Republican on the ballot is now in the hot seat about their stance on abortion. They're shaking in their boots, and doing everything they can to dodge this topic (remember Ciscomani running away from Indivisibles in 2022?). Hosting an event that gets earned media, is the perfect way to shine a bright spotlight on MAGA's biggest weak point and corner Members of Congress into answering questions about their takes on abortion.
There are a couple advantages to hosting events on anniversaries of news events. Having a date on the calendar means media outlets can plan ahead more easily. More importantly, the significance of the date means the headline “writes itself,” in a way that may make it more likely for the reporter to get the OK to cover the story. “On Dobbs Anniversary, Ralliers Call For…”. Especially if you’re in a red area where the anniversary is being celebrated by anti-abortion activists, getting press coverage for your Majority Over MAGA action/event will provide contrast and help people in your area find your group who want to join.
Planning Your Event
Every time we have put the call out for events, you have blown us away with your creativity. And the result is so much better and brighter than we could have dreamed. We’ve written the Dobbs Weekend of Action Toolkit as a starting point — you can take one of our ideas directly, make it your own, or do something totally new that could only come from your group and your exact combination of brains.
Whether you are hosting a rally, kicking off a Neighbor2Neighbor canvass, or organizing a letter-to-the-editor-athon, we are here to support you. Take a look at the toolkit and as always, if you have ideas for other ways that we can help make your events as powerful as they can be, please reach out to your Indivisible organizer or supportteam@indivisible.org.
